In artificial intelligence, forward chaining, also referred to as forward reasoning is a data-driven reasoning process that applies rules to known facts to generate new facts or reach a conclusion. The process is iterative in nature and continues until no more new facts can be determined or a goal is achieved. Expert systems leverage on this technique to perform tasks such as troubleshooting and diagnostics [1].
Basically, forward chaining is about reasoning from what is known. Instead of beginning with a goal, it starts with current facts, applying logical rules to derive new facts, step by step. Rules usually take the form of “if-then” logic, when certain facts are true, specific results or actions logically follow.
For example,
imagine a scenario where a loan approval system is developed where rules are
used to determine eligibility.
Rule: If an
applicant earns above ₦200,000 monthly, has been employed for over 2 years, and
has no existing loan defaults, they qualify for a personal loan.
Then an applicant with a monthly salary of ₦250,000 applies. Starting with the known fact (₦250,000 salary), the system checks employment duration (3 years confirmed) and credit history (clean BVN record). Since all conditions are met, the system infers loan eligibility and approves up to ₦2 million with 18% interest rate.

chaining has roots in the history of artificial intelligence and the
development of expert systems. It originated from the ground works of
researchers striving to build computer systems that could reason and solve
problems like humans in the mid-20th century.
Notable figures
in its history include Allen Newell and Herbert Simon at Carnegie Mellon
University based on their work on early AI programs like the Logic Theorist
(1956) and the General Problem Solver (GPS) in the late 1950s, which laid the foundational
principles for symbolic reasoning.
Forward chaining
became formalized and widely applied as a core inference mechanism with the
rise of rule-based expert systems in the 1970s and 1980s. Systems like MYCIN
(for medical diagnosis) or R1/XCON (for configuring computer systems) relied
heavily on large sets of "If-Then" rules. Forward Chaining proved ideal

components).
